Ali was elected on November 5th, 2024 to represent Richmond Virginia’s 3rd District on the Richmond City School Board. He was sworn in and began his 4 year term on January 8, 2025.

The Richmond City School Board is Richmond's local governing educational body and is composed of nine Board Members, one from each of the City's nine districts. These districts are identical to City Council districts. Board members are elected by the community members to a four-year term of office. The Chair, Vice Chair and other officers are elected by members of the School Board.

School boards have been around longer than America itself. According to the National School Boards Association, local control of public education began in 1647, when the Massachusetts Bay Colony passed a law requiring towns to establish and maintain schools.
